Why I Returned to Taiwan: Teacher Ashley’s TEFL Journey

globaleslportal

Hey there, fellow adventurers! 🌍

Life's journey often takes us on unexpected paths, and mine has been quite the rollercoaster. After departing Taiwan in 2021, I embarked on a whirlwind adventure with my Taiwanese partner, moving to Istanbul for work. From there, we hopped over to France and Switzerland, soaking in the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cultures. We then took the train up to Poland via Germany and ultimately settled in the small northeastern city of Olsztyn for about 9 months. During this time, my partner opened a charming bistro, while I taught ESL online to Taiwanese students, keeping my connection with Taiwan alive.

A Whirlwind of Adventures

Living in Turkey, Poland, and traveling through Europe was nothing short of exhilarating. The rich cultures, the warm-hearted people, and the food left an indelible mark on me. Each day brought a new adventure, and I basked in every moment. However, the call of a new chapter beckoned, and in February 2023, we decided to move to NYC, Brooklyn. I landed a job that had me commuting to Manhattan from Brooklyn, and we stayed there for about 1.5 years.

Rediscovering My Calling

Eventually, we moved to Connecticut to be closer to my family, and it was there that GlobalESLPortal was born. My TEFL adventures in Taiwan, which spanned from 2010 to 2021, had been so impactful and unforgettable that I wanted to find a way to facilitate others launching a similar exciting adventure. Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is my true calling. The rewards of being a TEFL teacher are unparalleled. It's not just about imparting knowledge; it's about connecting with people, understanding their cultures, and making a difference in their lives. Teaching English opens doors to new friendships, experiences, and personal growth, and it allows one to truly immerse in the life of other countries.

Learning from Others

While I was back in the States, I met many busy people who thought it was so wonderful that I had traveled. They seemed somewhat bereft that their busy schedules and responsibilities had them hemmed in. It reminded me all the more of the importance of taking the opportunity to explore the world whenever possible.

And what's more, there are plenty of TEFL teachers in Taiwan and elsewhere who are couples, even married couples. At the end of the day, the only thing that holds anyone with at least a bachelor's degree back from embarking on the adventure of a lifetime like this is your own inhibitions. There are so many benefits that make it worth your while. And let me tell you, for Americans, the cost of living vs. income can be really incredible.

Low Barrier to Entry

One of the most appealing aspects of TEFL is its low barrier to entry. Unlike many professions that require years of specialized education and certifications, TEFL offers a more accessible path. All you need is a bachelor's degree, a passion for teaching, and an adventurous spirit. The opportunities are endless, and the experiences are life-changing.

Returning to Taiwan

So, why did I return to Taiwan? The answer is simple: Taiwan feels like home. The warmth of the people, the vibrant culture, and the delicious food make it a place like no other. But more importantly, Taiwan offers a thriving TEFL community and countless opportunities for English teachers. Whether you're just starting or looking to add a part-time position, Taiwan has something for everyone.

By sharing my journey, I hope to inspire others to take the leap and explore the world of TEFL. It's a profession rich in opportunities and adventures, and the rewards are immeasurable. If you're considering a career in TEFL, remember that with a bachelor's degree alone, you have everything you need to start your journey. Embrace the adventure, connect with people from different cultures, and make a difference in their lives. The world is waiting for you!

Happy teaching and safe travels! ✈️🌏
